I built these hats for a production of the Mikado by the Harvard Gilbert and Sullivan Society. I treated traditional Japanese forms as origami, the ancient art of paper-folding, and constructed them out of black buckram trimmed with antique Victorian trims. Each hat had an element which moved. It was very gratifying to see that the character "Pish-Tush" altered his body language to include many head movements which animated the hat. His was the second hat from the left, and he actually wore it backwards so that the suspended element was in the front. The audience approved greatly. Click on thumbnails to see full size.
